Process: Drawing a Show Poster | Robert Kelly's YKWD Live Podcast at the Comedy Cellar

I just finished working on the artwork for a live podcast happening this coming Monday at the Comedy Cellar at the Village Underground in New York. The process was quick and easy, since Bob Kelly knew what he wanted and has an artistic background to begin with. That always helps... The first idea was to have him somewhere at the bottom with a whole bunch of the cast members/guests flying around the composition in various poses.

Then having looked at it, her wanted the special guests to be a surprise. So we had to take them out and add in hints of who they were, this time with tighter pencils.

We then had to add in the new producer, Lauren, somewhere in the composition that wouldn't be too dominant. (Top left)

From here I started inking and cleaning up the composition a bit to make sure it read well. We abandoned the idea of having the names by each person as they cluttered up the composition too much.

After the inks, I added one big block of colour for the main foreground.

Next, I picked a light source and a colour scheme- the YKWD branding is all red, so I picked a burned red and orange colour scheme. I really like the work of Cun Shi, who always manages to pair colours that look great together and fit the tone of the work he does.

After adding the shading and highlights to the foreground, I added the starburst up top to draw the eye to the title and give it a bit of action and movement. The gig details were all clear with white stroke around them as per the rest of the YKWD branding. Then it was finishing touches, and off to the printers... Voila!
