I’ve always wondered if there was a science behind the music we listen to when we work, and now I know. I’ve just been reading up on this very thing, and I’m convinced most of my work can be identified by what music I was listening to at the time I was drawing it.
If you show me a drawing from 2010 I could probably tell you the exact album I was listening to when I drew it; the information is embedded in the linework like DNA in an amber-entombed mosquito from the Cretaceous period.
I have a Spotify Playlist I listen to whenever I’m inking my New Yorker cartoons. You’re welcome to subscribe to it also if you like? Check it out here.
My wife plays her piano in the next room while I work sometimes, which does affect the work also, but that’s only on Sunday nights… when I’m also drinking scotch in the bath. That may also have some small effect on my work.
Anyway, give it a read!
