National Cartoonists Society Manhattan Chapter Holiday Party

As per tradition, the Manhattan Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society had their annual holiday party at the Society of Illustrators on the weekend; a full room of scribblers from all over New York and surrounding states downing copious volumes of booze and cracking wise all night long.

The very talented Mike Cavallaro designed the holiday artwork (above), which was then signed by all in attendance and auctioned off to the highest bidder. The money goes towards future chapter events.

Ed Steckley was awarded the “Tim Rosenthal Award for Volunteerism." It’s given to an NCS member that goes "above and beyond" for their chapter. As well as the framed certificate (thanks Guy Gilchrist!) he received a well-earned bottle of whiskey with a hand-drawn label by Berndt Toast Gang (Long Island Chapter) Chairman, Adrian Sinnott. It was gone within the hour.

Drawing on the Lenovo Yoga Book

screen-shot-2016-12-17-at-2-27-49-pm This week I was drawing live caricatures on the Lenovo Yoga Book.

I had high hopes for this product, as it has Wacom integrated technology in the pen, and the 'any pen' feature was pretty exciting. However, it still pales in comparison to its competitors. There is definitely an entry-level aspect to this product, but I wouldn't recommend it for fellow live artists... I think it needs to go back to the drawing board.

Speaking of which! Here are a few scribbles from the last couple of days... You draw on the pad and it comes up on the screen - same as "live mode" on the Wacom Bamboo Folio/Slate series.

Taking a Spell After 12 Years

Photo by Kerry-Ann Brown at Victoria/Tasmania chapter meeting before I left for the US. For the last 12 years I've had the privilege of serving on the board of the Australian Cartoonists' Association in various capacities; as WA Vice President, National Deputy President and President. This year I've decided to step aside and make way for some new blood.

It's a great club full of wonderful people. I'm very lucky to be part of it. Very best of luck to the new board and congrats on another successful Stanley Awards Weekend. Well done to all the winners!

Pre-release exclusive preview: Wacom MobileStudio Pro

I got to play around with the brand new Wacom Mobilestudio Pro tablet this last few weeks before it gets released. It's a great bit of tech, and I'm glad they came up with it as an insanely better answer to the iPad pro. I'll do a full review of it once I've had more time to use it and update the firmware.

Show Poster: Justin Smith

front

Inwood NYC local, Justin Smith had me create his promotional comedy postcards. It encompasses the day-to-day in the first Manhattan neighbourhood I lived in when I moved here. It was fun to capture it.
