Straight nips of spirits like vodka, tequila or absinthe have been removed from sale in various Perth venues because they have been irresponsibly misused. AC/DC fans are eagerly awaiting next week’s unveiling of a statue of rock god Bon Scott by Fremantle sculptor Greg James. The tribute to AC/DC’s former front man will be held up to a crowd of 10,000 at the Aussie Rock Concert at Claremont Showgrounds on Sunday (24th Feb)

It will then be placed somewhere in Scott’s former hometown of Fremantle, but just WHERE exactly is still a mystery. On April 18 2006, Joan Walsh Smith and Charles Smith unveiled their sculpture of wartime prime minister John Curtin in St John’s Square next to Fremantle town hall.

Maybe they’ll give Curtin some company…

Right on the back of a weekend of high praise for two history-making decisions to build a $1.1 Billion Sports Stadium and a $500 WA Museum, West Australian Premier Alan Carpenter is facing damaging new claims disgraced lobbyist and former premier Brian Burke and Julian Grill are still talking to government ministers.

The pair have been at the centre of a series of scandals over their influence, as evidence emerged in 2006 and 2007 at a long-running series of corruption watchdog hearings. Mr Carpenter last year reinstated the ban on ministerial contact with the lobbyists, which he’d controversially overturned in January 2006 when he took over as premier from Geoff Gallop.

A STIRLING councilor who suggested city staffers try printing reports on both sides of the A4 was this week told to leave the paper shuffling to the experts.
“I was quite surprised by the response,” Elizabeth Re told the Voice. “For three years now, since I came onto council, I’ve been asking why double siding cannot be given a go.
“It’s been like, ‘yeah, yeah,’ – lipservice.”
At the last council meeting of 2007, officers fielded Cr Re’s request to prepare a report on the feasibility of printing all city paperwork on both sides. Staffers’ response to the February 5 council meeting was less than lukewarm.
“The city supports a range of sustainability initiatives in its operations including printing of both sides of the paper where possible in all publications and paperwork …” the Humphrey Appleby-like retort read. “The request for a report on this matter is not supported, as this is an administrative issue that will be addressed by the administration.”
Undeterred, Cr Re on Tuesday night successfully put a motion that, except where print quality would be compromised, council paperwork will now be doublesided. Ironically, Cr Re represents the Doubleview ward.

Overloaded power sockets used for an alleged hydroponic marijuana set-up could have started a Perth house fire, police say. Firefighters were called after tradesmen noticed smoke pouring from a window in a Balga house. Police said the blaze was coming from hydroponic equipment in the corner of the room. Officers later allegedly found cannabis material in a back shed. A 32-year-old-man was later charged by summons with cultivating cannabis.
