And So It Begins... · 23 January 2006

So you’ve somehow stumbled across my new and somewhat experimental blog.

Good for you.

The main purpose of this blog is really as a conduit of sorts for me to air my thoughts and ideas in a somewhat public medium.
This was a suggestion made by a now fellow-blogger and friend, Chris Clark of whose blog I am a regular reader.

I’ll briefly set the scene.

I’m a freelance cartoonist working in Perth, Western Australia. I produce two cartoons a week for the Herald and Voice newspapers group. This is a group of papers based in Fremantle,Bio Pic (Western Australia) where the Fremantle Herald, the Cockburn City Herald, the Melville City Herald and the Perth Voice are produced, as well as the “Mid-Week” Fremantle Herald are produced on a weekly basis.

As well as this, I produce commissioned caricatures from photos, and do Live or On-The-Spot Caricatures at corporate and private functions. (This bit is how I actually make money to survive.)

I’ve only been a cartoonist full-time since the start of January, 2005 so I’m relatively new to the game, but in doing so have picked up a lot of good advice (and a nice award or two) along the way.

I would generally like to be able to work my way up to being a full-time editorial cartoonist at a News Limited or Fairfax daily newspaper somewhere in Australia, but I’m pretty comfortable with the fact that it’s going to take a while to get there.

I make no claim that anything I write will be highly refined, well-punctuated or sufficiently substantiated by a second source, (cop that alliteration with a lisp..) but I can claim that what I write will be honest, and free of self-censorship, or censorship by any foreign sources.

My only real limitation on this is that I’m unable to publish any work or information related to my work before it goes to press and is published in print first; I learnt that the hard way.

All in all – I’m going to be using this blog to talk about anything that might come to mind that may or may not be of interest to anyone who drops by to have a read. Frankly it will probably just end up being something relatively ‘productive’ to do while I procrastinate.
