Context: It was an incredibly long week in politics last week for Director-general of Health, Neale Fong. It started out with revelations that Fong gave himself a 7 per cent pay rise bringing his salary up to $565,272. Fong then decided to relocate to a new office and fit it out to the tune of $450,000, and to cap the week off nicely, he lost his license for speeding. So naturally, the local WA media pounced all over the stories and reported every detail of Fong's contract, leading to a massive backlash from the public/tax-payers about how unfair it is. To be fair, he has a massive job of tuning the health system to suit our massively fast-growing WA population managing a budget of $3.5 Billion Dollars - not a job I'd like to have.

This is in the same week that it was reported that New Western Force recruit, Matt Giteau will be paid a whopping $4.5 Million over 3 years for playing rugby. The silence amongst the public was deafening - Between the two jobs; I think I know which is more important. The only difference is that Fong's salary requires funding from tax-payers; but can you honestly see any other way of funding such an integral body such as the WA Health Department?
