| Context: On Saturday it was reported that Police Minister John D'Orazio wants to introduce lout laws similar to those currently in use in the UK. The laws would allow police to expel people who are displaying antisocial behaviour in a public place for up to a month. The proposition is in response to ongoing problems with loutish behavious in Northbridge and Fremantle, as well as on Perth's public transport system. It's a shame that it has come to this, but I have to say, louts are louts. They aren't just going to go home and play Nintendo just because they've been expelled from the city. As well as that, enforcing these laws is going to be twice as difficult as implementing them. Are the exiles going to have to wear brightly coloured suits for police to identify them in crowds? It's a novel idea, and I claim ownership if they use it... |
