Context : Many have been explosed to the media flurry over Federal Treasurer Peter Costello's likely
tax cuts to be revealed in the coming budget. A report was presented to Costello apparently suggests
that there is scope for further tax relief for middle-income earners, along with a raft of other property,
business and excise taxes. This all comes, "conveniently enough", just as Foreign Minister Alexander
Downer and Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile are due to provide a statement to the Cole enquiry about
their level of involvement in the AWB bribery scandal. Matt Price summed it up nicely when he said:
"You don't need to be a tactical genius to understand that hip-pocket issues are likely to bite
harder and sharper than complicated wheat deals."
