Context
: A
pod of more than 100 false killer whales was shepherded back into deep water
following
a massive stranding south of Perth. 63 Whales beached themselves in Mandurah
and 100 more in Busselton.
This came a week after an international animal rights group has lost the first
round of a legal battle against a
Japanese company it says kills whales inside Australia's Antarctic whale sanctuary.
The decision follows a submission by the Federal Government to the court saying
it could take no
action against whaling company Kyodo Senpaku Kaisha Ltd because Japan did not
recognise Australia's
jurisdiction in the area. The Humane Society International's (HSI) said Kyodo
Senpaku Kaisha killed around
440 minke whales inside Australia's Antarctic Territory each year and had slaughtered
whales
within the sanctuary every summer since 1987.
