Context : There has been a call by several high-profile coaches who want the ball to be thrown up by the field
umpire rather than bounced. Coaches, including Sydney's Paul Roos, Brisbane's Leigh Matthews and
Mick Malthouse of Collingwood, claim irregular bounces can lead to advantages to one team
which can quickly turn into goals. The issue has come to a head in the past fortnight following several errant
bounces which have led to teams capitalising on a quick advantage.
Former player Mark Fraser has
been criticised in particular for producing uneven bounces, one in particular which aided
a Collingwood goal against West Coast last weekend. (In reference to the gagline above - Freo
struggled to make a decent score against Hawthorn last weekend in a shocking display which lead
to their defeat by over 50 points.
